Parents’ Corner // When Something Feels Different, It’s Okay to Ask Why
Many parents quietly wonder:
“𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘨 𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘭?”
“𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘴𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥?”
“𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘮𝘦𝘥, 𝘢𝘯𝘹𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴, 𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘯?”

Sometimes, what children show us through behaviour is not “misbehaviour”, but communication.
In early childhood, emotions, social interactions, transitions, and regulation are all deeply connected to brain development and a child’s sense of emotional safety.
This is why understanding the child behind the behaviour matters so much.
At Lumina International Preschool, we believe schools have an important role to play in supporting children’s emotional well-being, not separately from learning, but as part of it.
Mental health and education are deeply interconnected.
Children learn, connect, adapt, and grow best when they feel emotionally safe, understood, and supported by the adults around them.
This is also why we recently introduced consultation sessions with our Clinical Psychologist, Clemence Vallot.
These sessions are not designed around labels or quick conclusions.
Instead, they aim to offer:
• thoughtful observation
• a deeper understanding of the child’s experience
• guidance for parents
• and support grounded in emotional development and real-life interactions
One important aspect of this approach is that observations happen within a familiar classroom environment rather than a traditional clinical setting.
Because children often reveal far more about their emotions, regulation, communication, and social engagement when they feel safe and at ease.
Sometimes, the most important first step is not immediately “fixing” a behaviour.
It is slowing down enough to understand what the child may be trying to communicate underneath it.
These conversations matter.
And the earlier children feel understood, the stronger the foundations we build for emotional resilience, confidence, relationships, and lifelong well-being.
